LOCATIONS & PROCEDURES
Based on numerous suggestions from past students to shorten the course by splitting the time into two days, but still remain in the required guidelines, we have adopted the following schedule.
The SATURDAY classroom portion will still be held at Grady's BBQ, 7400 Bandera Road. We will start class at 8:00 am with check in starting at 7:15 am. Class will end no later than 3:30 pm (maybe sooner with some other changes being instituted).
The range qualification will be held the following day (SUNDAY) at the Bracken Range located at 19140 Marbach Lane (2 miles north of Rolling Oaks Mall-Nacogdoches Rd and 1604) and will start at 9:00 am and finish approximately 12:30pm-1:00pm. Generally, you are not at the range for much more than an hour.
For class dates, please see the schedule page.
We can qualify fifteen people at a time and utilizing the coach/shooter method, our relays move relatively fast, usually 20 to 25 minutes a relay, if...IF (little word-big meaning)...all weapons are well maintained, the shooters are, at the very least, familiar enough with their weapons to know the basic operation of it (loading, making ready, which end of the barrel the bullet comes out) and practice safe shooting habits. If these conditions are met, the range qualification will be safe, effortless, and fun. Although the qualification is very easy, the bottom line is, if you cannot accomplish the above, you really have no business trying to qualify without some basic instruction, which quite frankly, we do not have the time to do while at the range. If you are unable to find someone to help you prior to qualifying, we strongly suggest some basic instruction with an unaffiliated, but highly recommended by prior students, group: Gun Training San Antonio.
For more information, please visit our Range page
You must qualify with a 32 caliber or up. If you qualify with a semi automatic you can carry either a semi or a revolver whereas, if you qualify with a revolver, you are limited to carrying only a revolver (I didn't write the rules).
Application packages are now supplied by the instructor at the time you take the course.
After passing the required classroom and shooting qualification, you will be issued a Certificate of Training form which will be enclosed with the fingerprint cards, pictures, notarized pages and several other necessary documents (discussed during class), along with the required state fees, and sent, by you, to DPS. Even though you may have submitted your application and paid your state fee by credit card online to DPS (separate from our class registration), there are still other necessary documents to be sent after the class. Initial licenses are issued for a minimum of 4 years.
Out of state residents may now obtain a Texas concealed handgun license. They will need a current driver's license from the state they are a resident of, or a Texas State ID card, and will need to take the class in Texas.
After taking the class, an applicant has up to two years to send the paperwork and fee to the state.
