RENEWALS
Registration Link at Bottom of Page

The classroom portion of the class will start with the regular class at 8:00 am (check in around 7:30 am), but end at approximately 11:00 am.

Renewal applicants will then meet the very next day (SUNDAY) at Bracken Range, 19140 Marbach Lane (2 miles north of Rolling Oaks Mall-Nacogdoches Rd and 1604). Renewals who have fired and cleaned their weapons recently (weapons will be inspected by range officers) will start qualifying at 9:15 am and should be through, baring any problems as noted below, in approximately 30-45 minutes.

If you have not yet received your renewal notification within 5 to 6 months ahead of the license expiration date (on your birthday), you will need to call DPS (1 800 224 5744) and request one be sent to you. If you have moved, the post office will not forward the notification.

Renewal applicants can renew their license within six (6) months of the expiration date. Often, people wait until a month ahead of the expiration date, but this will probably result in being unlicensed for a period of time while waiting for the new license. As soon as you receive your renewal notification from DPS it is advisable to make arrangements to renew soon thereafter. Renewals actually have 1 year from the expiration date to renew, but will be considered unlicensed after the expiration date. Failing to renew within one (1) year after expiration they will be considered as new applicants by DPS with the appropriate new applicant fees charged.

AFTER TAKING THE RENEWAL CLASS THE PAPERWORK NEEDS TO BE RECEIVED BY DPS WITHIN 6 MONTHS AFTER THE CLASS DATE.

The notification you receive from DPS will explain the renewal process. You will be provided with a PIN number should you wish to use the internet to perform the renewal application process which does allow you to pay DPS with a credit card, as well as reduce the amount of paperwork required for submission after class. If you decide to utilize the internet, DPS will send you a confirmation receipt which you will return to them with the CHL 100 form we provide. You do not need to physically have the paperwork in hand to take the renewal course, but you WILL need to have either the confirmation receipt (internet process), or the renewal application form (non internet) prior to submitting your paperwork to DPS after the class.

While the following certainly does not apply to a vast majority of renewals, we seem to be having an inordinate amount of problems (bad shooting and malfunctions) with more than just a few renewals at the range. Some renewals seem to believe that because they qualified 4 to 5 years ago, they only need to carry their handgun and not worry about if it will even fire, or if it does, not worry about hitting anything until re-qualification time.

As evidenced at the range almost every month, the problems we most encounter are caused by a small minority of the renewals not knowing about and/or not caring about their weapon, much less practicing every now and then. These potentially dangerous conditions extend qualification time and frustrate everyone the rest of the day. For the life of me (no pun intended), I just don't understand why in the world a person wants to carry a handgun of which they forgot which end of the barrel the bullet comes out, where the safety is, how to load a magazine, or how to put the gun in battery. What's more depressing is not really caring to find out except maybe every 4 to 5 years when they blow the dust off.

Some of the renewals (again, certainly not the majority) seem to feel the classroom and range re- qualification is nothing more then a necessary evil, or at the very least, a chance to see if their weapon still shoots. If this shoe fits, maybe you should seriously consider not renewing your CHL.

Except for rare ocasions, we do not rent weapons to renewals feeling they should own their own.

If you are going to carry a weapon, then respect the use and care of same. Otherwise some evil person will show you how to use it, but in the wrong direction.
