THE RANGE
We are now using the outdoor range at Bracken Range, 19140 Marbach Lane,
Bracken, Texas. Click for map here. The range is located in Northeast San Antonio just 2 miles outside of Loop 1604 and Nacogdoches Road (2 miles north of Rolling Oaks Mall). We generally reserve the range on Sunday from 9:00am through 1:00pm, but if all goes well and malfunctions are kept at a minimum because qualifiers handguns are well maintained, this period of time is shortened and you will generally not be at the range for more than an hour and a half.
Remember, you must qualify with a 32 caliber or up. If you qualify with a semi automatic you can carry either a semi or a revolver whereas, if you qualify with a revolver, you are limited to carrying only a revolver (I didn't write the rules).
I cannot emphasize enough that all shooters be familiar with their weapons and the weapons be in good working order. Delays in qualification are generally caused by folks not knowing their handguns, malfunctions of non-maintained weapons or stale ammo. I cannot impress enough on you the need to clean and perform necessary lubrication on your weapon before and after firing at the range. Not to mention safety reasons, this will prevent a great deal of frustration on your part, on my part, as well as the other qualifiers. As a matter of fact, if you are going to carry a weapon to be used in the possible defense of your life, you should know how to use it and it should always be in no less than excellent condition. One of the worst problems we encounter while qualifying is preventing the danger the shooter sometimes presents to themselves because of their lack of knowledge about their weapon. If you are going to qualify every 4-5 years and then either carry or store your weapon until the next qualification period without any practice, the bad guy may take it away from you and show you how to use your weapon, but from a different perspective. EITHER MAKE YOURSELF PRACTICE ON HOW TO USE AND MAINTAIN YOUR WEAPON, OR DON'T GET A LICENSE. GO TO THE RANGE PERIODICALLY AND/OR TAKE A BASIC FIREARMS COURSE. Although we are in no way affiliated with the following group, we have had outstanding reports from people who have taken their course, therefore we highly recommend: Gun Training San Antonio for all basic and advanced handgun training.
Okay, now ... the course of fire was developed by DPS and is used by all Texas Concealed Handgun instructors. The first 20 rounds are fired from the three yard line; the next 20 rounds from the 7 yard line and the final 10 from the 15 yard line. Most folks have already qualified after completing the 7 yard line phase of fire.
If you wish to qualify with a semi automatic weapon (32 cal or up), but don't have one (please use your own weapon if you have it), we have 9mm (ammo is scarce), 380cal (ammo is practically non-existent) and 32cal (ammo is very scarce) weapons for rent. The price includes ammo, but because of the scarcity, as well as the price (when you can find it) of ammunition, we have had to raise our rental rates to $35.00. We cannot guarantee we will have the ammo for all calibers available.
For safety reasons, absolutely no Saturday Night type weapon, i.e., Davis, Jennings, Loricin, etc. will be permitted on range. Please bring an appropriate weapon storage bag or case. Additionally, please wear clothing which will prevent spent hot brass from falling down your shirt or blouse. If you have your own ear and eye protection, please feel free to bring them. If not, they will be available.
